Next Generation Myanmar 2019

Myanmar feature of British Council’s research series “Next Generation” (2019)

Next Generation is British Council’s global research series which explores attitudes and aspirations of young people in countries that have experienced rapid social, economic, and political change. The research aims to amplify youth voices and contribute to improving youth policies and programmes.

In partnership with British Council and VSO, CMC contributed to the 2019 Next Generation Myanmar feature by designing the methodology and research content, as well as conducting desk review, a nationwide survey, KIIs, FGDs and youth policy workshops.

Next Generation Myanmar 2019 showcased the optimism of the Myanmar youth regarding their opportunities for political and social engagement and discovered their aspirations for economic wellbeing and peace. Moreover, the research suggested a desire to influence change and contribute to society around them. On the other hand, the research seemed to indicate that concerns about their financial futures, employment opportunities, crime and drugs lingered, as well as concerns about religious, racial, and other forms of discrimination. Thoughts among the youth regarding the potential impact of social media on their lives and their country were also brought to light.
