Training Needs Assessment Report: Increasing Women’s Access to the Labour Market in Syria

Assessment Report evaluating the training needs to increase women’s access to the labour market in Syria (2016)

As a result of the conflict in Syria, many men, for reasons such as being involved in the conflict or having suffered its consequences, were in some way absent from their families or lost their income-generating possibilities since market and supply chains collapsed. This caused the gender-balance to shift, and many women were forced to take over new roles and responsibilities in their families, including generating income.

This study was carried out by CMC and Orange Capacity Building Organization. Through Key Informant Interviews and Focus Group Discussions, the team collected data on the needs, opportunities and challenges faced by women in Syria to access the labour market, in order to inform on suitable design and delivery of future training programs focusing on women’s capacity development. In particular, the report looked into the employment opportunities available to women in Syria, working conditions, skills and training needs, women’s learning preferences, and willingness to learn and to join training courses. It also mapped current training and capacity development courses being implemented locally, as well as challenges and constraints women faced in this regard such as cultural sensitivities, market conditions and logistical constraints.
